Your Office Wi-Fi Problem Isn't Bandwidth, It's Placement
The instinct when Wi-Fi feels slow is to buy a faster plan. Nine times out of ten, the actual problem is a handful of access points guessing at coverage instead of being placed against a real signal survey.
The support ticket almost always reads the same way: "Wi-Fi is slow in the conference room." The instinct is almost always the same too: call the ISP, ask about a faster plan. In our experience, that's the wrong fix more often than it's the right one. We've walked into offices paying for gigabit connections that were dead-slow in the one room that mattered, because the actual bottleneck was never bandwidth.
What's actually happening in that conference room
Wi-Fi signal doesn't travel in a clean circle. It's absorbed by walls (especially concrete and anything with rebar), reflected by metal cabinets and glass, and degraded by distance in ways that don't match how a floor plan looks on paper. An access point mounted in a hallway because that's where the network cable happened to run can leave a conference room two doors down sitting at the edge of usable signal, especially once you account for a dozen laptops, phones, and a video conferencing unit all competing for airtime on the same channel.
Bandwidth from your ISP is the pipe coming into the building. Wi-Fi coverage is a completely separate problem: how well that bandwidth actually reaches the device in someone's hand. You can have a fast pipe and terrible coverage at the same time, and most "slow Wi-Fi" complaints are a coverage problem wearing a bandwidth complaint's clothing.
Why "just add another access point" isn't the fix either
Adding access points without a plan often makes things worse, not better. Overlapping access points on the same or adjacent channels create interference with each other, and more hardware doesn't help if it's all fighting over the same limited 2.4GHz spectrum, which is crowded in any office with more than a handful of devices. We've seen offices with five access points performing worse than a properly placed three, because nobody planned the channel assignments or checked for overlap.
What an actual site survey looks like
Before we place or move a single access point, we walk the physical space with signal measurement tools, not a floor plan and a guess. That survey accounts for wall materials, device density per room, what's actually running over the network in each zone (video calls need different handling than someone browsing email), and dead zones that only show up when you're standing in them, not when you're looking at a drawing.
Placement comes out of that data: access points positioned for actual coverage overlap without interference, channels planned so adjacent APs aren't stepping on each other, and capacity sized for how many devices a room actually holds at once, not a generic average. Then, critically, we test coverage in the specific rooms that matter, a conference room during an actual video call, not just open floor space, before calling the job done.
When bandwidth actually is the problem
Sometimes it genuinely is bandwidth: a growing team has outgrown a connection sized for five people, or a specific high-throughput use case (large file transfers, heavy video conferencing across many simultaneous calls) is genuinely saturating the pipe. The way to know the difference is measurement, not assumption. Before upgrading a plan, check whether the problem exists locally at the router versus specifically in the rooms furthest from an access point. If it's the latter, a faster internet plan won't fix a single thing.
